Handcrafted Games and Activities

Summer brings the informal to everything we do, from the clothing we reach for in the morning, to the shoes we kick off as we step from deck to the indoors.

Children run for bikes, adults settle into lawn chairs and games on the grass don’t look much different than they did a decade or two ago. It’s a slice of continuity, a sweet reminder of the things that don’t change as quickly as the rest of the world.

How we entertain ourselves changes as well. If we’re lucky, we’ll spend some time enjoying low key vacation time – perhaps camping, or some time at a cottage. It’s far easier to “unplug” when you are surrounded by trees, water and fresh air. I grew up spending weekends and summers at the lake, and one of the charms of this kind of holiday is how low-tech everything is. We spent most of our time outside, we ran around like half-wild creatures and we were in and out of the water like puppies. On rainy days we would read old books that had been on bookshelves for years, or play games. Never anything new or electronic, no, cabin time means card games, old board games, checkers and the like.

Want to explore the charms of simple games and pastimes yourself? Go one step further with this collection of handmade games and activities to keep you and your family entertained and unplugged while on vacation this summer. Ranging from simple to moderate in skill level, even the creation of these games and activities is time well spent, together.

What cottage isn’t improved by a collection of rustic or handmade items? Here are some ideas to get you started:

Cute ladybug tic tac toe game

Matching game for toddlers

Dominoes made from smooth rocks

Twister

Beanbags

Car bingo

Fishing game

Handmade guess who game

If you need activities for a group weekend, letting kids loose to paint rocks and create the games themselves can be a great way to keep them occupied. These could also make unique gifts to leave behind for the host/hostess who welcome you to their cottage for the weekend.

However you enjoy them, the simple appeal of handcrafted games will last for years.
