After Two Successful Seasons in the U.S., National Costume Swap Day and Used.ca Launch the First National Costume Swap Day Canada on October 13th

Halifax, N.S. – September 6, 2012

This year, every kid’s favorite holiday got a little more parent and planet-friendly with the launch of National Costume Swap Day™ Canada. 

In its first year north of 49, National Costume Swap Day Canada (October 13), calls for everyone to go green for Halloween by organizing local kids costume swaps in their communities. Kids get new-to-them costumes, and parents save money and the planet by recycling princess gowns, witches hats, and superhero capes from years past.

This fun, practical and super savvy event got started in 2010 in the U.S. with 73 swaps in 23 states and Canada – exploding onto the scene, featured on local TV and other media around the country as well as on Good Morning America.

Anyone can list a swap for free and parents seeking swaps in their area can find them at Costumeswapdaycanada.com, also at no cost.

Seeking to align themselves with like-minded brands, National Costume Swap Day Canada has partnered with Used.ca, Canada’s leading online buy-sell-website with local and regional sites across the country.

“A costume swap is recycling at its most creative, practical and fun,” said Robin Rivers, Director of National Costume Swap Day Canada “It not only means that fewer resources are used to make new products, but also means less packaging and less waste, since costumes often are thrown in a box or tossed into the trash as soon as Halloween is over.”

In fact, swapping the costumes of only half of the children who celebrate Halloween would reduce annual landfill waste by 6,250 tons, equivalent to the weight of 2500 midsize cars. And that doesn’t even address adult costumes.
