A Capital History

When Capital Iron first opened its doors in 1934 it wasn’t the “everything store” of today, it was a hub for ship dismantling. But it was still the place to go to find things you needed that you couldn’t find anywhere else —especially during the Second World War when war rations made many items scarce.

Four family generations later, Capital Iron is still the place to go to find almost everything you need for your home and garden.

“We carry a lot of those unique, hard-to-find items. We like to say, ‘If you’ve tried everywhere else, you should have tried Capital Iron first!’” says Morgan Foley, Capital Iron’s Marketing Coordinator.

Capital Iron sees a lot of customers who grew up going to the store with their parents and fondly remember all the odd gadgets and ship artifacts. Foley and the other staff love seeing that spark when someone hasn’t been to the store in a while, and a flood of memories come back.

Family ties make Capital Iron feel like home

Once you get over the great selection of common and uncommon household items, you’ll probably notice something different about the store’s customer service. Step into Capital Iron and you can expect a genuine interaction with someone who knows the products and is happy to help.

Why?

“It’s a hard thing to put your finger on, but it might have a bit to do with the fact that the store hasn’t passed through a lot of different hands,” Foley says, and the family agrees “We’ve done a lot of growing up together.”

The ownership has stayed in the family for four generations, from Morris Greene to his son Ron, to Ron’s son-in-law Mike Black, to their daughter Kylie who’s the current C.O.O. With a solid base of committed staff who enjoy coming to work every day, you’ll encounter better than your typical big box store.
